For Valentine’s day, I have been considering wines that two people might share. You like red wine, but your partner likes white. If you choose my rosé recommendation you will not have to compromise on taste. I have bought and sampled many rosé wines, purchased locally in Bournemouth, including beautiful, delicate rosés which did not have the character for food, gold and bronze medal winners, English rosé and rosé from Provence. The rosé I have chosen is Las Mulas 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Organic, Vegetarian and Vegan Rosé Reserva from Chili. It is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Central Valley. The colour of this rosé is absolutely gorgeous. It is deep like the skin of a red onion and really stood out on the shelf. In the glass, the 13% alcohol volume could be clearly seen as the legs clung seductively to the sides of the glass. Like all the rosés I sampled, there was not a lot on the nose but on the palate this wine signalled quality. I often find rosé watery or intensely dry but this one was fresh and smooth with low acidity. It was much weightier in the mouth than the others leaving a satisfying oily coating on the palate. Not raspberry or strawberry but herbaceous, green pepper with a hint of melon and, I was surprised that such a young wine had oak on the length. This wine was delicious without food, but I knew it would stand up to some strong flavours. In respect of Valentine’s day, I tried a variety of dishes with this gorgeous wine and am pleased to be able to recommend the following. The first is a starter of bruschetta, soaked in good quality olive oil topped with cherry tomatoes served with prawns on a bed of Iceberg lettuce. The second is raw, chopped tuna steak marinated in chili, ginger, garlic and sesame seeds served with bruschetta. If you are looking for a main course then I highly recommend seared tuna steak served with new potatoes in a delicious dressing of coriander, chili, ginger, lime, soy sauce, honey, and olive oil and seasoning. Happy Valentine’s Day.
I purchased Waitrose Las Mulas 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé Reserva for £9.99 but it is currently on offer at £8.99. Well worth it for a Valentine’s Day treat.
